How to Make Friends
You want to know how to make friends. Perhaps you are the new kid on the block, you just changed schools, you just moved to a new city or maybe you are just shy. Whatever the case, it is good to have a friend or two. Friends can keep loneliness away. When you have a good, close friend, you have a real treasure. You can share secrets without being afraid that someone is going to blab your business all over the school. A good friend will stand beside you no matter what and be there for you any time of the day or night. Humans are not designed to be alone, it is normal for us to want and need human contact. Friends are very important to all of us, but making friends can sometimes be difficult.

Know what you want in a Friend
When you are looking for friends, think about your own interests and values. You probably want to make friends with someone who has similar beliefs and interests. When you have something in common with someone, you have things to talk about and you can do activities that you enjoy together. You don't have to like ALL of the same things. In fact, it is good if you each have some interests that are different. You can learn a lot from each other. Being friends with someone who has interests that are different from you can broaden your horizons and you just might find some new things that you never knew you enjoyed.

How to Approach Others
If you want to make friends, you have to be willing open yourself up to them and make an effort to meet people. Sure, it can be scary to approach someone you don't know. You never know if they will accept you or not. The best thing, though, is to step right up, smile, make eye contact and start a conversation. Finding new friends can be an adventure.

Don't be too pushy and take time to listen as much as you talk. Ask questions about the person or people you are talking to. People love to talk about themselves. Asking questions such as what type of music or movies they like can also let you know if you have anything in common with them. Don't be too clingy, though, that tends to turn people off. Take it easy, there is no need to be desperate. Let the friendship grow in its own time.

Birds of a Feather
It is very important that when you are finding friends, you look for people who have values that are similar to yours. There are a lot of things going on out there and people may be involved in activities that are illegal and even dangerous. You do not want to get mixed up with such an element. Birds of a feather flock together, so the saying goes. Remember, when you hang with someone who is doing illegal things, even if you are not doing them it will automatically be assumed that you are. If your friends are smoking weed in the car you are in, you won't be spared if they get busted. You will go to jail right along with them even though you are innocent. Take care of the company that you keep.

When it Doesn't Work Out
Rejection happens and sometimes people can be cruel. If you reach out to someone and they reject you, don't let it get you down. You are a good person, a valuable friend and if they can't see it or are unwilling to give you a chance, they probably aren't the type of friend that you want anyway.

Good friends accept you just as you are. They stand by you and are always there for you. It is said that the best vitamin for making friends is B-1. That is very true. If you want to make good friends, you have to be a good friend.
